The Real Women Of Bay Ridge: Wife, Mother, Volunteer Loves Community

By Paula Katinas

Sonia Abi-Habib has good advice for people who are interested in doing volunteer work in the community, but who might feel like they don’t have enough time to become involved in civic organizations.

“Pick one thing. If you feel you don’t have the time to do everything, pick one thing. Become part of that group or that cause. You don’t have to be involved in every organization,” she said. “And do what you can, even if it means pitching in just a little bit. You don’t have to change the world all by yourself.” read more »

Citizen Kane’s Bay Ridge Beat: March 29, 2012

By Friends of Tom Kane

Luck of the Irish … With all the rain in the forecast for last Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Parade, the folks who marched and came to observe the festivities were blessed with nice enough weather to ensure another successful day. The parade featured traditional Irish step dancers, marching bands, bagpipers and all the traditional banter on the reviewing grandstand brought to us once again by Peter Clavin.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg was a special guest at the parade, but perhaps an even more popular political entity making the rounds was Peanut, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis’s pet chihuahua, who was dressed in an adorable green jacket and cap! read more »

U.S. Rep. Grimm Celebrates Women’s History Month

A group of Americans took part in a British tradition yesterday, thanks to U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, who invited guests to a “high tea” to celebrate Women’s History Month.

Elegant place settings, fine china, crumpets, scones, cucumber sandwiches and a tea cozy were all part of the event, which took place at Boulevard Books & Café on 13th Avenue. The tea party was organized by Clorinda Annarummo, an aide to Grimm, with help from her friend Joan Giachetti.

Tatiana Nicoli, owner of the bookstore, was one of eight women honored by Grimm for Women’s History Month.

The list of honorees also included Georgine Benvenuto, owner of the art gallery known as Gallery 364. Benvenuto is a photographer whose pictures have often graced the pages of the Bay Ridge Eagle.

In addition to Nicoli and Benvenuto, the honorees were Arlene Rutuelo, Aida Nicolaou, Susan Esposito, Zeinab Badier, Eleanor Schiano, and Phyllis Carbo.

Grimm praised the women for their contributions to the community. “Your contribution is immense. You can never be overlooked and you can never be thanked enough,” he told the women.
