Brian Kaszuba

By Paula Katinas

Editor’s Note: The Bay Ridge Eagle has been profiling “The Real Women of Bay Ridge” for several months in response to a controversial “reality” show that caused a local uproar. Now we are proud to expand our profile series to include  men — and women — who are indeed “Neighbors Making News!”

Brian Kaszuba’s lifelong love of politics and his strong Catholic faith have blended together for his job.
Kaszuba, a lawyer, is the director of special projects for the Catholic Citizens Committee, an organization that strives to make Catholics in the Diocese of Brooklyn more politically aware.
“We work in conjunction with the Diocese to help spread the teachings of the church,” said Kaszuba, a graduate of Xaverian High School and Saint Peter’s College. read more »

As the sinkhole that rocked 79th Street residents last Wednesday is being brought under control by repair crews, work is continuing at the site of the enormous sinkhole on 92nd Street near Third Avenue that formed more than a month ago.
That hole, which sinks down more than 70 feet, is still not fully repaired, according to officials.
Councilman Vincent Gentile and other officials will hold a public meeting on Thursday, Aug. 9, in the community room at Shore Hill, 9000 Shore Road, at 7 p.m. to give residents an opportunity to learn about the progress of the repair work at the 92nd Street sinkhole from DEP experts. read more »

Kayaks Coming to 69th Street Pier Eco-Dock

There is good news for those who enjoy kayaking and other water sports. The 69th Street Pier is being fitted with an eco-dock, thanks to $300,000 in city funds obtained by Councilman Vincent Gentile.

An eco-dock is a type of floating dock that has to be affixed to a pier.

Joanne Seminara, chair of Community Board 10, said she’s excited about the eco-dock.

“Man your kayaks!” Seminara told board members at their April 19 meeting. “We are preparing to welcome a brand new thing called an eco-dock to the 69th Street Pier this spring.”

June Johnson, chair of the board’s Parks Committee, and members of her committee will get a preview of what the eco-dock will look like and how it can be used at a special presentation by city representatives to take place at the Bay Ridge Library, 7205 Ridge Boulevard, on April 26.

“This is a program that is part of the citywide Waterfront Revitalization Program, which recommends and facilitates new regulations to broaden the use of our waterfront and make it more accessible for development and public use,” Seminara said.

Flowers and plants in the Narrows Botanical Gardens will blossom even more now, thanks to Councilman Vincent Gentile, who has donated $2,000 to the organization which maintains the gardens. Group members happily accept the check from Gentile, second from left in front row, during a recent ceremony. Located on Shore Road and 69th Street, the Narrows Botanical Gardens attracts thousands of visitors each year. In addition to its rose garden, it contains a Japanese garden and an area dedicated in memory of Sept. 11 victims.

The “Real Women of Bay Ridge” Denounce New Reality Show

An animated Councilman Vincent Gentile speaks out against "Brooklyn 11223," joined by dozens of women, including state Sen. Diane Savino (right), who see the show as an offensive misrepresentation of Bay Ridge women.

Councilman Vincent Gentile isn’t gonna let the Oxygen Network’s Bay Ridge-based, reality-based paean to stereotype, “Brooklyn 11223,” sully his neighborhood’s reputation without a fight.

As we’ve reported, last Friday Gentile held a press conference to denounce the show’s “degrading” portrayal of our district’s women and to reassert the sovereignty of the “real women of Bay Ridge.” He represented this demographic with an invited group of Bay Ridge businesswomen, civic activists, political leaders and homemakers who reportedly don’t spend a majority of their time cursing, drinking and dancing in clubs, activities that the female stars of “Brooklyn 11223″ are reputed to endorse.

The new “reality” show follows two ex-friends, Joey Lynn and Christie, whose friendship was torn apart by jealousy and deception, and whose hatred for one another is so consuming that it pervades their other friendships and the friendships of their friends, thus causing rampant  infighting and frequent bouts of drinking, dancing and cursing, all of which take place on the grounds of once-respectable Bay Ridge businesses. read more »

Bay Ridge Women Unite Against ‘Degrading’ Reality Show

Councilman Vincent Gentile was joined by dozens of women at a press conference held on Feb. 24 to denounce “Brooklyn 11223,” the new reality show that he said presents a negative portrait of women.

The show, which debuts on the Oxygen Network on March 26, follows a group of twenty-something women who apparently spend much of their time cursing, drinking, and dancing in clubs in Bay Ridge and other locations.

“The producers degrade all women,” Gentile said. “We’re here to present the real women of Bay Ridge.” read more »

Vincent Gentile Takes a Stand Against Trashy TV

In a move that is certain to garner more publicity for the show, Bay Ridge councilman and ever-vigilant steward of good taste Vincent Gentile will host a press conference tomorrow morning to speak out against a fresh evil that threatens our district’s decency: the new reality show “Brooklyn 11223.”

We’ve reported on the show before. It’s the Oxygen Network’s try at a “Jersey Shore”-style stereotype cash-in, and through its candid portrayal of a group of Bay Ridge twenty-somethings whose once-healthy friendships have all been devastated by jealousy and double-dealing, it promises to teach us something about the “bonds of friendship,” the “price of betrayal” and ultimately ourselves. read more »

Ovington Post Office Is Back from the Grave, Again

The Ovington Post Office at 6803 4th Ave. is nothing if not tenacious. Thanks to a rally of support from the location’s regulars and a few strongly worded letters to the Brooklyn postmaster from Councilman Vincent Gentile, the venue has once again escaped the USPS’ short list of candidates for speedy closure.

National budget cuts first caused the USPS to consider closing the Ovington office in 2009, but a community outcry staved off defeat then as well. read more »
