Long Leads Third Ave. Memorial Day Parade

Bay Ridge — The theme of the 145th Annual Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade was “Honoring Those Who Serve” and the participants included current members of the U.S. military, like Col. Michael Gould, commanding officer of the Fort Hamilton Army Base, as well as veterans who wore their uniforms long ago, like Mike Long, the U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served as the grand marshal. read more »

Veterans Get ‘Golden’ Treatment

Bay Ridge — The ballroom of the Bay Ridge Manor was filled with heroes on May 24 as state Sen. Marty Golden treated hundreds of military veterans to a pre-Memorial Day breakfast to thank them for their service to the nation.
“We live in the greatest nation in the world and it’s because of you,” Golden told the veterans, who were seated at tables around the ballroom.
Anthony Testaverde, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Vietnam War, is an aide to Golden and organized the breakfast. read more »

Memorial Day Parade Committee Meets

The United Military Veterans of Kings County will hold general membership meetings on April 17 and May 15, at 11 a.m. at the Fort Hamilton Post Chapel, building 129. Anyone interested in participating in the parade on May 28 should attend. Newcomers are welcome. Call (917) 873-1508 if you plan to attend. Now in its 145th year, it is the oldest continuously run Memorial Day Parade in the nation.

The theme for the 2012 parade is “Honoring Those Who Serve.” The 2012 Grand Marshal is Mike Long, chairman of the New York State Conservative Party and a United States Marine veteran. The deputy grand marshals are all veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.

The reviewing officer is Col. Michael Gould, commander, U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton.

The brownies looked so good, I couldn’t resist!

Covering a Bake Sale at Visitation Academy, the Catholic school for girls at 8902 Ridge Boulevard on Feb. 14, I had my eye on a tray of brownies that were made by the aunt of one of the students.

I diligently did my job, interviewing people and taking photos of the event. But every once in a while, out of the corner of my eye, I looked at the table with MY brownies! read more »
