Uzzi Family Patriarch Arrived From Italy 100 Years Ago

“Will everyone please be quiet for a minute? We’re trying to Skype with Italy!” Richard Uzzi shouted across the vast Saint Finbar Confraternity Center.
In the front of the hall, a small group of Uzzi’s relatives fiddled with a laptop computer, trying to get a Skype connection to a group of Uzzis in Italy.
While that was going on, clusters of stateside family members were seated at tables festooned with balloons and Italian and U.S. flags, chatting and laughing. In a clever touch, the balloons were anchored to the tables by boxes of spaghetti. read more »

St. Finbar Church Marks 100 Years

Bath Beach – Saint Finbar Catholic Church opened in 1912. That same year, Woodrow Wilson was elected president of the United States, the Titanic sank, Fenway Park opened in Boston, New Mexico and Arizona became the 47th and 48th states respectively, and the Girl Scouts of America was founded.

One hundred years have passed since the church doors first opened to welcome worshipers and St. Finbar Church has survived and prospered.

Led by their pastor, the Rev. Michael Louis Gelfant, parishioners celebrated the 100th anniversary of their church building at 138 Bay 20th St. with a special mass on May 20. read more »
