Bay Ridge Prep: State Senate Recognizes Champions

Bay Ridge Prep’s Junior Varsity and Varsity Tigers were honored recently at a special dinner and awards ceremony hosted by the school’s athletics department and emceed by Athletic Director Tony Campbell. All student-athletes were recognized for their participation in the school’s various sports, and individual awards for Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, Leadership, Team Spirit, and Dedication were presented for each team.
The awards dinner, held at Sirico’s Catering Hall on 13th Avenue, also featured the presentation of two very special awards. read more »

Golden, Malliotakis Celebrate Little League Opener

Senator Martin Golden and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis celebrate opening day with members of the Capetanakis family.Senator Martin Golden (R,C,I-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C-Brooklyn, Staten Island) recently celebrated the 68th Precinct Youth Council’s baseball season opening day. Joining members of the Capetanakis family who play in the league, the legislators enjoyed a day of baseball and helped ring in the start of a new season full of opportunities for Bay Ridge’s youth.

ECPW Wrestling Returns to Brooklyn!

Wrestling legend Kevin Nash will join the champions of East Coast Professional Wrestling to do battle for a great cause on Saturday, April 21 at Our Lady of Guadalupe gymnasium, 1518 73rd St. Nash, one of the founding fathers of the New World Order that transformed pro-wrestling in the late 1990s, will be in action alongside ECPW TV stars such as Heavyweight Champion “The Bulldog of Brooklyn” Tony Biella, Light-Heavyweight Champion P.J. Storm, The Re-Enforcer Andrew Anderson, Ryan Roxbury, Frankie Flow, Sal E Dee and many more.

ECPW has been producing fund-raisers in Brooklyn for more than 25 years and always strives to produce top-quality, family-oriented entertainment. For tickets, call Gary at the OLG Fathers Club Office, (718) 757-1039. All proceeds will benefit Our Lady of Guadalupe youth programs.

These Little Adelphians Are Big-Time Athletes!

It has been a busy year for the Athletic Department at Adelphi Academy, but also specifically for the Academy’s Lower School student-athletes.

The fall featured a tennis program run by instructor Steven Carberry of Bay Ridge Sports Camp. The eight-week program was open to students in Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade and focused on the fundamentals of the game.

“The program was a great success. My staff had a wonderful time working with the students,” Coach Carberry said. “It will now be an easier transition when it is time to join Adelphi’s Upper School tennis team.” read more »

DHAA Indoor Soccer: Stingrays Win JV Division Championship

Talk about saving the best for last! The DHAA JV Division championship game between the first-place Stars and second-place Stingrays went down to the wire and drew more than 100 people.

The game was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to score until 12 minutes into the first period. The Stars started Michael Barbati in goal and he was simply amazing, making some difficult saves early on. Richard Fodera, John Pluchino, Lennon Tomaselli and Nikolas Angilletta played spectacular on defense for the Stars. The Stingrays started goaltender Anthony Scarpaci, who arguably played the game of his life. His fellow defenders Marisa Sparacio and Bobby Ioannou seemed to break up every scoring opportunity the Stars created in their zone. read more »

DHAA Baseball: Knights Celebrate Season’s Success With Awards

The Dyker Heights Athletic Association/St. Bernadette Knights held its annual travel baseball awards ceremony at Sirico’s Catering Hall, 8023 13th Ave., on Friday, March 9. More than 240 people came to see the players receive their participation awards, and there were several awards presented for special achievement. read more »

Tom Knight’s Diamond Reflections: Remembering Warren Spahn

Warren Spahn, the great Hall of Famer, won 363 games and lost 245. That’s more wins than any other left-handed pitcher in the history of the game! And he tied the great New York Giants Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson for most seasons with 20 or more victories. He and the right-hander had 13 each. But this is not about Spahn’s many records.

When I first saw Spahn pitch, his lifetime record was 0-0. He had just been brought up from the minors by the Boston Braves. Boston’s manager was Casey Stengel. Neither the Braves nor the Giants were going anyplace that year and were just playing out the season. read more »
