Tonight’s The Night! ‘Brooklyn 11223’ Debuts

This is a scene from the controversial reality series "Brooklyn 11223."

The much talked-about (and much maligned) new reality series “Brooklyn 11223” makes its debut tonight on the Oxygen Network at 11 p.m. The series, which purports to be a look inside the lives of a group of 20-somethings in Bay Ridge, will live or die on its ratings.

Is “Brooklyn 11223” a new “Jersey Shore?” Will its stars become pop icons like Snookie and Mike The Situation? Only the viewers can determine that.

Councilman Vincent Gentile, state Sen. Diane Savino and a group of female business and civic leaders have been leading the charge against the new show, speaking out whenever and wherever they can, describing it as a false depiction of Bay Ridge women.

Readers of Bay Ridge Eagle can judge for themselves. We’ve been running an exciting series called “The Real Women of Bay Ridge’ highlighting the accomplishments of the community’s women.

If you watch “Brooklyn 11223” tonight, let us know what you think of it. We welcome your comments here.

The “Real Women of Bay Ridge” Denounce New Reality Show

An animated Councilman Vincent Gentile speaks out against "Brooklyn 11223," joined by dozens of women, including state Sen. Diane Savino (right), who see the show as an offensive misrepresentation of Bay Ridge women.

Councilman Vincent Gentile isn’t gonna let the Oxygen Network’s Bay Ridge-based, reality-based paean to stereotype, “Brooklyn 11223,” sully his neighborhood’s reputation without a fight.

As we’ve reported, last Friday Gentile held a press conference to denounce the show’s “degrading” portrayal of our district’s women and to reassert the sovereignty of the “real women of Bay Ridge.” He represented this demographic with an invited group of Bay Ridge businesswomen, civic activists, political leaders and homemakers who reportedly don’t spend a majority of their time cursing, drinking and dancing in clubs, activities that the female stars of “Brooklyn 11223″ are reputed to endorse.

The new “reality” show follows two ex-friends, Joey Lynn and Christie, whose friendship was torn apart by jealousy and deception, and whose hatred for one another is so consuming that it pervades their other friendships and the friendships of their friends, thus causing rampant  infighting and frequent bouts of drinking, dancing and cursing, all of which take place on the grounds of once-respectable Bay Ridge businesses. read more »

Councilman Vincent Gentile was joined by dozens of women at a press conference held on Feb. 24 to denounce “Brooklyn 11223,” the new reality show that he said presents a negative portrait of women.

The show, which debuts on the Oxygen Network on March 26, follows a group of twenty-something women who apparently spend much of their time cursing, drinking, and dancing in clubs in Bay Ridge and other locations.

“The producers degrade all women,” Gentile said. “We’re here to present the real women of Bay Ridge.” read more »

Vincent Gentile Takes a Stand Against Trashy TV

In a move that is certain to garner more publicity for the show, Bay Ridge councilman and ever-vigilant steward of good taste Vincent Gentile will host a press conference tomorrow morning to speak out against a fresh evil that threatens our district’s decency: the new reality show “Brooklyn 11223.”

We’ve reported on the show before. It’s the Oxygen Network’s try at a “Jersey Shore”-style stereotype cash-in, and through its candid portrayal of a group of Bay Ridge twenty-somethings whose once-healthy friendships have all been devastated by jealousy and double-dealing, it promises to teach us something about the “bonds of friendship,” the “price of betrayal” and ultimately ourselves. read more »

Snookie and The Situation better get ready for some competition from Bay Ridge in the world of reality television!

The stars of “Jersey Shore” may soon be eclipsed by a new set of reality stars.

“Brooklyn 11223,” a new series featuring two young women, Joey Lynn and Christie, who are rivals and whose intense dislike for one another affects their relationships with their friends, premieres on the Oxygen Network on March 26 at 11 p.m.

The show takes place in and around Bay Ridge, its restaurants, its clubs, and its streets, according to a press release from Oxygen. Scenes were also filmed in Bensonhurst and Coney Island. read more »
