Merchant Murders: As Fears Escalate, Leaders Urge Precautions

Merchants are terrified in the wake of the murders of two local store owners, one in Bay Ridge and another in Bensonhurst, according to a Fifth Avenue business leader, who said he’s considering holding a meeting with shopkeepers to try and ease everyone’s fears.
Basil Capetanakis, vice president of the Bay Ridge Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), said he would like to hold a special meeting “to inform our members” about the various crime prevention programs available at the 68th Precinct.
“These are things we’re going to need from now on,” Capetanakis said during a press conference held by Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis on Fifth Avenue and 78th Street on Aug. 8 to discuss crime prevention. “Things have changed. Society has changed. We have to warn our merchants.” read more »

Pol Urges Shopkeepers To Accept Precinct’s Help

Bay Ridge — As we first reported here, police have traced the murders of two local merchants — Mohamed Gebeli in Bay Ridge and Isaac Kadare in Bensonhurst — to the same gun, a .22 caliber pistol.
In the wake of the murders, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis said she will hold a press conference on Aug. 8 to discuss crime prevention services that merchants and residents can employ from local police precincts to better protect themselves. read more »

Cops Continue Search For Merchant’s Killer

Bay Ridge — Police are asking for the public’s help in the investigation into the July 6 slaying of a Fifth Avenue clothing store owner.
Posters containing a picture of victim Mohamed Gebeli popped up on lampposts along Fifth Avenue, near Valentino Fashion, the men’s clothing store he owned at 7718 Fifth Ave. in which he met his death at the hands of a killer.
At press time, police had not made an arrest. No suspects have been named in the slaying. read more »

Cops Continue Search for Killer

Bay Ridge — As the Eagle first reported, police are continuing their search for the killer who shot a clothing store owner to death inside his Fifth Avenue shop on the night of July 6, a slaying that alarmed the business and residential communities of Bay Ridge.
The victim, Mohamed Gebeli, 65, was shot once in the neck inside his shop, Valentino Fashion, a men’s clothing store at 7718 Fifth Ave., police said.
At press time, police had no suspects and no motive in the slaying. read more »

$10K Reward Offered as Cops Hunt Killer

Bay Ridge – Bay Ridge business owners and residents expressed shock today at the murder of Mohamed Gebeli, 65, owner of Valentino Fashion on Fifth Avenue.
“This is terrible. He was such a nice man,” said Janet Gounis, who works in a Capital One Bank branch on Fifth Avenue and knew Gebeli as a customer. “He was always so calm and unhurried. Everyone liked him.” read more »
