U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, the first elected official in New York State to endorse Mitt Romney for president, said the former Massachusetts governor made the right choice in picking Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate.
“In the time I’ve come to know Paul Ryan, I’ve learned he is a man of principles and traditional values, and that he truly has a sincere desire to put his country before politics,” Grimm said. “I believe he will be an excellent vice president, combining his knowledge on the economy with a strong work ethic to help put our country back on track and get Americans back to work.” read more »

“This is one of the few moments in your life when you are meeting with an elected official and he’s not doing all of the talking!” U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm told a group of business owners he had invited to a roundtable discussion he was hosting on April 11.

Grimm made it clear to the business owners that he wanted to meet with them to hear what their concerns were, how hard it is to run a business in New York City, and about how it could be made easier. read more »

Small Business Owners Meet With Grimm

The majority of jobs in the U.S. are not created by major corporations, but by the owners of small businesses, according to U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, who met with a group of 19 business owners this morning to hear their concerns and ideas.

“Sixty-five percent of the jobs in this country were created by small businesses,” Grimm said. As proof, Grimm polled the 19 merchants sitting around the conference table about the number of employees they had.

The number came to 400. It included 150 people employed by a local supermarket and a law office with four workers. read more »

U.S. Rep. Grimm Celebrates Women’s History Month

A group of Americans took part in a British tradition yesterday, thanks to U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, who invited guests to a “high tea” to celebrate Women’s History Month.

Elegant place settings, fine china, crumpets, scones, cucumber sandwiches and a tea cozy were all part of the event, which took place at Boulevard Books & Café on 13th Avenue. The tea party was organized by Clorinda Annarummo, an aide to Grimm, with help from her friend Joan Giachetti.

Tatiana Nicoli, owner of the bookstore, was one of eight women honored by Grimm for Women’s History Month.

The list of honorees also included Georgine Benvenuto, owner of the art gallery known as Gallery 364. Benvenuto is a photographer whose pictures have often graced the pages of the Bay Ridge Eagle.

In addition to Nicoli and Benvenuto, the honorees were Arlene Rutuelo, Aida Nicolaou, Susan Esposito, Zeinab Badier, Eleanor Schiano, and Phyllis Carbo.

Grimm praised the women for their contributions to the community. “Your contribution is immense. You can never be overlooked and you can never be thanked enough,” he told the women.

Bay Ridge Business Owners Double Down on Push for Two-Hour Meters

U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm is surrounded by elected officials and business owners on Fifth Avenue during a press conference at which he called on the city to install two-hour parking muni-meters on more shopping thoroughfares.

A one-hour parking meter is not compatible with fine Italian dining. So says Dominick Vaccaro, owner of Ristorante Vaccaro, a popular Italian restaurant on Fort Hamilton Parkway, who claims his business is being hurt by the city’s small-time meters.

“You have one-hour meters. One hour’s not enough time to eat a nice meal in a restaurant. You get your appetizer and by the time you’re ready for your main course, your hour is up and you have to run outside to feed the meter. By the time you get back, your food is cold,” Vaccaro said. read more »

A ‘Piazza’ Is Not a ‘Plaza,’ It’s A Classy ‘Summer Stroll on 3rd’

What’s the difference between a “plaza,” a “piazza” and a “stroll?”

Hopefully, Bay Ridgeites and a select throng of peaceful, law-abiding, culture-loving aficionados will find out this July and August when they come to Third Avenue’s “Summer Stroll.”

The program, which will hopefully take place on selected Friday nights, is such a novel idea that it’s acquired a number of names. One newspaper has called it a “plaza.” Not so. read more »
