A Day of Pride, Remembrance

Hello to all our friends on “Heff’s Corner.” Here’s hoping you all enjoyed the recent holiday weekend. The weather was great, the beaches were crowded and people were gathering for their barbecues and picnics. It was a perfect Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day is for you — the past and present, the living and the dead. Thank you to all of our veterans! read more »

Bay Ridge — Excitement is building for the 145th Annual Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade! Veterans from all over the borough are getting ready for the big day, when they will proudly march behind U.S. Marine Corps veteran Mike Long in the parade.
The parade will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, starting at 11 a.m. The parade route runs along Third Avenue with a starting point at 87th Street.
The parade route runs along Third Avenue to Marine Avenue and then up to Fourth Avenue and over to John Paul Jones Park, on Fourth Avenue and 101st Street, where a ceremony will take place. The ceremony will include a wreath-laying, a flag-raising, the playing of “Taps” and a 21-gun salute by soldiers from the Fort Hamilton Army Base.
The Brooklyn parade is the oldest continuously run Memorial Day march in the U.S., according to organizers. The march is sponsored by Borough President Marty Markowitz and the United Military Veterans of Kings County organization.
The theme of this year’s parade is “Honoring Those Who Serve.”
“It’s a Memorial Day parade, so it’s primarily to pay tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for this country. But we also like to salute those who served and came home,” said Ray Aalbue, a member of the parade organizing committee. read more »
