Golden, Malliotakis Celebrate Little League Opener

Senator Martin Golden and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis celebrate opening day with members of the Capetanakis family.Senator Martin Golden (R,C,I-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C-Brooklyn, Staten Island) recently celebrated the 68th Precinct Youth Council’s baseball season opening day. Joining members of the Capetanakis family who play in the league, the legislators enjoyed a day of baseball and helped ring in the start of a new season full of opportunities for Bay Ridge’s youth.

These Little Adelphians Are Big-Time Athletes!

It has been a busy year for the Athletic Department at Adelphi Academy, but also specifically for the Academy’s Lower School student-athletes.

The fall featured a tennis program run by instructor Steven Carberry of Bay Ridge Sports Camp. The eight-week program was open to students in Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade and focused on the fundamentals of the game.

“The program was a great success. My staff had a wonderful time working with the students,” Coach Carberry said. “It will now be an easier transition when it is time to join Adelphi’s Upper School tennis team.” read more »

DHAA Indoor Soccer: Wizards Cast Spell To Win Championship

Wizards 8 Jaguars 3

The Rookie Division championship game started out as a nail-biter, as the red-hot Jaguars stood toe to toe with the first-place, undefeated Wizards. The Jaguars wasted no time in scoring, as Antonio Gentile landed a perfect pass on the foot of Joe Rowdis, who blew it past the goaltender for a 1-0 lead.

The Wizards countered with a goal of their own when Chris Hutra received a pass from Tyler O’Leary and scored to tie the game at 1-1. The Jaguars scored next on another blast from Rowdis that was set up by Anthony D’Urso. The Wizards responded when Hutra scored with six minutes left in the period to tie the game at 2-2. read more »

Kids Show Off Fun Easter Hats!

Students at St. Patrick School enjoyed the annual Easter Hat Parade around the auditorium on Tuesday, April 3. The creative youngsters marched around in bonnets composed of everything from grass to eggs to stuffed rabbits!

DHAA Indoor Soccer: Stingrays Win JV Division Championship

 Stingrays 3 Stars 1

Talk about saving the best for last! The DHAA JV Division championship game between the first-place Stars and second-place Stingrays went down to the wire and drew more than 100 people.

The game was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to score until 12 minutes into the first period. The Stars started Michael Barbati in goal and he was simply amazing, making some difficult saves early on. Richard Fodera, John Pluchino, Lennon Tomaselli and Nikolas Angilletta played spectacular on defense for the Stars. The Stingrays started goaltender Anthony Scarpaci, who arguably played the game of his life. His fellow defenders Marisa Sparacio and Bobby Ioannou seemed to break up every scoring opportunity the Stars created in their zone. read more »

DHAA Baseball: Knights Celebrate Season’s Success With Awards

The Dyker Heights Athletic Association/St. Bernadette Knights held its annual travel baseball awards ceremony at Sirico’s Catering Hall, 8023 13th Ave., on Friday, March 9. More than 240 people came to see the players receive their participation awards, and there were several awards presented for special achievement. read more »

Golden Guide Helps Parents Protect Kids From Internet Predators

State Sen. Marty Golden

State Sen. Marty Golden begins his letter on his new Internet safety brochure with a sobering question. “Did you know that one in five children has been sexually solicited online?” he wrote.

Golden has printed a brochure, “Internet Safety,” subtitled “What Every Parent Should Know,” to serve as a guide to parents on how to better protect their children against cyber criminals.

The brochure is available at the senator’s district office at 7408 Fifth Ave. Residents can also e-mail Golden at golden@nysenate.gov to obtain a copy.

The four-page guide offers such tips as “Parental Control Tools,” aimed at assisting parents looking to have a firm hand on their children’s Internet habits. read more »

Kids To Perform ‘Snow Queen’

Students in the Christ Church After School Program will be performing Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved tale The Snow Queen on Fridays, March 16 and 23, at Christ Church Bay Ridge, 7301 Ridge Boulevard, beginning at 6 p.m.

The performance is geared for children of all ages and features children ages 5 through 12 as its actors. The production celebrates the music and traditions of the Sami (Laplanders), Romani (gypsy) and Ukrainian cultures. Original music will be performed by the children. The show is directed by Victoria Hofmo, with musical direction by Jen Baker, sets and costume design by Krystle Pietrafesa, and assistants Judy Pietrafesa and Michael Hetteix.
