“This is one of the few moments in your life when you are meeting with an elected official and he’s not doing all of the talking!” U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm told a group of business owners he had invited to a roundtable discussion he was hosting on April 11.

Grimm made it clear to the business owners that he wanted to meet with them to hear what their concerns were, how hard it is to run a business in New York City, and about how it could be made easier. read more »

May Cancer Benefit Brings Attention to Rare Disease

Members of Theresa’s Heart Foundation, organized in memory of Theresa Brunetto, a Dyker Heights resident who passed away from an extremely rare form of cancer last year, will hold a Stand Up to Cancer Mother’s Day Shopping Event on Thursday, May 10, at Garfield’s Lounge, 274 Fourth Ave., from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

All proceeds will be donated to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Relay for Life to aid in cancer research, organizers said.

The event itself will feature 25 different vendors offering a variety of merchandise just in time for Mother’s Day. Food and entertainment, including a deejay, will also be provided. Tickets are $20 ahead of time or $25 at the door. read more »

Brunetto was just 25 years old when she was diagnosed with pleomorphic sarcoma of the heart. She passed away on Nov. 8, 2011.

Citizen Kane’s Bay Ridge Beat: March 29, 2012

Luck of the Irish … With all the rain in the forecast for last Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Parade, the folks who marched and came to observe the festivities were blessed with nice enough weather to ensure another successful day. The parade featured traditional Irish step dancers, marching bands, bagpipers and all the traditional banter on the reviewing grandstand brought to us once again by Peter Clavin.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg was a special guest at the parade, but perhaps an even more popular political entity making the rounds was Peanut, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis’s pet chihuahua, who was dressed in an adorable green jacket and cap! read more »

Viking Fest 2012 Date Announced

The Vikings are coming! The Scandinavian East Coast Museum has announced that Viking Fest 2012 will be held at Owl’s Head Park on Saturday, May 19, from noon to 5 p.m. Visitors to the free event are advised to use the entrance on 68th Street and Narrows Avenue.

The popular festival features re-enactment groups, The Norseman, a half-size replica Viking ship and its crew, Historic Arms and the Society for Creative Anachronism presenting combat demos, educational displays and hands-on activities. read more »

Supporting Norway on Third Ave.

The annual Norwegian Day Parade is moving to Third Avenue this year, according to officials, who gathered with supporters at a fundraiser held at the Salty Dog Restaurant on Sunday, March 4.
