What’s That Smell? Officials Hope To Sniff Out Cause

A powerful and pungent odor invaded the streets of Bay Ridge this afternoon, Aug. 21, as residents in at least three locations in the community held their noses in disgust.
The odor, which some described as a gasoline-type of smell and others said smelled like raw sewage, was first reported to Community Board 10’s office at around 3:30 p.m., according to Board 10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann. read more »

Grimm: Ryan Would Make Excellent Veep

U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, the first elected official in New York State to endorse Mitt Romney for president, said the former Massachusetts governor made the right choice in picking Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate.
“In the time I’ve come to know Paul Ryan, I’ve learned he is a man of principles and traditional values, and that he truly has a sincere desire to put his country before politics,” Grimm said. “I believe he will be an excellent vice president, combining his knowledge on the economy with a strong work ethic to help put our country back on track and get Americans back to work.” read more »

Golden Fears Sinkholes Are Part of Larger Problem

Echoing concerns raised at a meeting with DEP officials on Tuesday, Aug. 9, state Sen. Marty Golden called on the New York Department of  Environmental Protection (DEP) to consider conducting a full overhaul of sewers and water mains in the wake of the sinkhole eruptions that have taken place in Bay Ridge this summer.
At the emergency meeting called by Community Board 10, DEP Deputy Commissioner James Roberts told local residents that a study of the current infrastructure is  being  conducted and  should  be  completed by the end of the year. read more »

At ‘Night Out’ Against Crime’

No one had to ask, “Is there a doctor in the house?” when a man had a seizure and fell to the ground in Shore Road Park during the “Night Out Against Crime” event on Aug. 7.
“Doctor Mike” came to the rescue!
Mike Szczepanski, a foot doctor who is affectionately known by Bay Ridgeites as “Doctor Mike,” was right there to assist police as they helped the man in the crowded park that night.
“We made sure his air passage was open so that he could breathe,” Szczepanski said.
The man, who is in his 40s, had a seizure while standing near the park’s 79th Street entrance at around 8 p.m. The “Night Out” event, featuring a concert, rides for kids, a barbeque, and a meet-and-greet with local cops, was in full swing at the time. read more »

City: Sinkhole Repairs Could Take 2 More Months

Bay Ridge residents who have spent their summer watching repair crews at work at the site of a sinkhole on 92nd Street will likely be spending part of the fall doing the same thing.
The sinkhole repair project could take two more months before it’s finished, according to a city official, who spoke candidly at an emergency meeting of Community Board 10 on Aug. 9. read more »

Honor Heroes at Run for the Fallen

On Saturday, Aug. 18, hundreds of patriotic folks are expected to participate in the Third Annual Run for the Fallen, held in memory of those service members who have been killed in action.
People are encouraged to run for a service member at the Aug. 18 event. Runners will start in John Paul Jones Park on Fourth Avenue and 101st Street, and run along the Shore Road Promenade to the 69th Street Pier and back. read more »

Gun-Running Scheme: Ex-Cop Sentenced to 40 Months

He won’t be going anywhere for a while.
Joseph Trischitta, a former community affairs officer for the 68th Precinct, has been sentenced to 40 months in a federal prison for his role in a gun-running scheme led by another former cop at the Bay Ridge stationhouse.
Trischitta, who is retired from the New York Police Department, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Aug. 9 to 40 months in prison for taking part in a scheme involving the illegal interstate transport of firearms and stolen good across state lines, according to Preet Bharara, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York. read more »

Merchant Murders: As Fears Escalate, Leaders Urge Precautions

Merchants are terrified in the wake of the murders of two local store owners, one in Bay Ridge and another in Bensonhurst, according to a Fifth Avenue business leader, who said he’s considering holding a meeting with shopkeepers to try and ease everyone’s fears.
Basil Capetanakis, vice president of the Bay Ridge Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), said he would like to hold a special meeting “to inform our members” about the various crime prevention programs available at the 68th Precinct.
“These are things we’re going to need from now on,” Capetanakis said during a press conference held by Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis on Fifth Avenue and 78th Street on Aug. 8 to discuss crime prevention. “Things have changed. Society has changed. We have to warn our merchants.” read more »

Sinkhole Meeting To Be Held Aug. 9

As the sinkhole that rocked 79th Street residents last Wednesday is being brought under control by repair crews, work is continuing at the site of the enormous sinkhole on 92nd Street near Third Avenue that formed more than a month ago.
That hole, which sinks down more than 70 feet, is still not fully repaired, according to officials.
Councilman Vincent Gentile and other officials will hold a public meeting on Thursday, Aug. 9, in the community room at Shore Hill, 9000 Shore Road, at 7 p.m. to give residents an opportunity to learn about the progress of the repair work at the 92nd Street sinkhole from DEP experts. read more »
