PGA Champ Shows Kids How To Get a Hole-in-One


Rory McIlroy, the new star of professional golf who is drawing favorable comparisons to Tiger Woods, came to Dyker Heights to offer a few pointers to young golfers on Aug. 20.
McIlroy, the world’s top-ranked golfer after winning the Professional Golf Association (PGA) championship in early August, demonstrated for the young golfers the proper way to swing a golf club. His eager audience was composed of dozens of young golfers from around the city. read more »

Strolling along … Who pays these weathermen, anyway? After constant thunderstorm warnings spooked organizers into canceling the third installment of “Summer Stroll on 3rd” last week, we were befuddled when 6 p.m. rolled around and the rain had all but stopped for the night. What a shame!

At ‘Night Out’ Against Crime’

No one had to ask, “Is there a doctor in the house?” when a man had a seizure and fell to the ground in Shore Road Park during the “Night Out Against Crime” event on Aug. 7.
“Doctor Mike” came to the rescue!
Mike Szczepanski, a foot doctor who is affectionately known by Bay Ridgeites as “Doctor Mike,” was right there to assist police as they helped the man in the crowded park that night.
“We made sure his air passage was open so that he could breathe,” Szczepanski said.
The man, who is in his 40s, had a seizure while standing near the park’s 79th Street entrance at around 8 p.m. The “Night Out” event, featuring a concert, rides for kids, a barbeque, and a meet-and-greet with local cops, was in full swing at the time. read more »

Honor Heroes at Run for the Fallen

On Saturday, Aug. 18, hundreds of patriotic folks are expected to participate in the Third Annual Run for the Fallen, held in memory of those service members who have been killed in action.
People are encouraged to run for a service member at the Aug. 18 event. Runners will start in John Paul Jones Park on Fourth Avenue and 101st Street, and run along the Shore Road Promenade to the 69th Street Pier and back. read more »

Music was in the air at the Bay Ridge version of “National Night Out,” the anti-crime event aimed at bringing cops and citizens closer together.
Thousands of people came to Shore Road Park at 79th Street to enjoy a concert by ABBA Girlz, an ABBA tribute band, Tuesday night.

Causing ‘Trouble’ for a Good Cause!

Members of the Jeff Samaha Theater Productions/Ridge Chorale, in conjunction with the Helping Hands Project, are going to be causing trouble, but it’s for a good cause. The talented performers will reprise their roles from their popular show Trouble at the Tropicabana to raise money for victims of the devastating fire on 81st Street.
Showtimes are Saturday, Aug. 11 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Antiochian Church Hall, 81st Street and Ridge Boulevard. read more »

Sweet! Legendary Leske’s Bakery Reopens

Leske’s Bakery celebrated its grand reopening Wednesday, Aug. 8, to the delight of local fans, many of whom lined up all the way around Fifth Avenue to order their favorite sweets.

Leading the way was Sue Grecke, who grew up on 79th Street with her family as a child. Her family members, now dispersed across the U.S., are looking forward to receiving a care package in the near future from Grecke, who left her home in Queens at 5 a.m. to be first on line. read more »

Sinkhole Meeting To Be Held Aug. 9

As the sinkhole that rocked 79th Street residents last Wednesday is being brought under control by repair crews, work is continuing at the site of the enormous sinkhole on 92nd Street near Third Avenue that formed more than a month ago.
That hole, which sinks down more than 70 feet, is still not fully repaired, according to officials.
Councilman Vincent Gentile and other officials will hold a public meeting on Thursday, Aug. 9, in the community room at Shore Hill, 9000 Shore Road, at 7 p.m. to give residents an opportunity to learn about the progress of the repair work at the 92nd Street sinkhole from DEP experts. read more »
