“Black Jack” visited the sports program, which is open to both boys and girls, ages 7 to 13, to perform his amazing ball-handling act and conduct a shooting clinic. The entire Xaverian community was invited to enjoy the talents of this renowned NBA halftime show performer.
“Black Jack” broke down his shooting technique into easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructions. He also revealed the secret of his success to the crowd: practice.

Top St. Pat’s Grad Headed to Fontbonne

Amanda Larney graduated at the top of her class at St. Patrick School.

Amanda Larney, the valedictorian of Saint Patrick School, won a full scholarship to Fontbonne Hall Academy and will enter the prestigious girls’ Catholic high school in the fall.
Amanda was a busy young woman during her years at St. Patrick, particularly in her senior year, when she worked on the yearbook staff and put together the slideshow for the graduation ceremony. The slideshow always features pictures of the graduates during their years at the school set to a musical score.
Amanda was a member of the Student Council, the National Junior Honor Society, and the Aquinas Club, a group for academic achievers. She enjoyed being in the Aquinas Club, she said.
“We would do projects during the year. It was a lot of fun,” she said.
Amanda is already looking ahead to college. She hasn’t selected a university yet. After all, it’s still four years away. But she has given a great deal of thought to a career. read more »

By Paula Katinas

Bay Ridge – In September, Gabriella Orsi, the valedictorian of the Class of 2012 at Visitation Academy, will be a freshman at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic girls school in Manhattan that Lady Gaga and Caroline Kennedy both attended.
But Gabriella’s decision to attend a school on the Upper East Side had nothing to do with the outrageous performer or the daughter of John F. Kennedy.
“I felt it was very similar to Visitation,” she said of her new school. “It has the same kind of atmosphere. It’s a small school. Everyone was very nice and friendly when I visited there.”
As valedictorian of her class, Gabriella had the honor of delivering a speech at Visitation Academy’s graduation ceremony.
“I talked about looking forward to the future with optimism,” she said. read more »

Bay Ridge — Kassenbrock Brothers Memorial Scholarship winner Daniel Witke had just graduated from Xaverian High School when he was asked to speak at another school’s graduation.
“I was asked to speak at P.S. 102’s graduation,” he said. “It was pretty inspiring.”
That ceremony took place on June 20.
Witke spent four months during his senior year at Xaverian volunteering his time as a tutor at P.S. 102.
He was also a volunteer tennis teacher at McKinley Intermediate School, which he found “very enjoyable.”
As if that isn’t enough, Witke somehow found time over the years to intern as a sports reporter for the Bay Ridge Eagle, covering basketball, baseball, track and other sports at Xaverian. read more »

Inna Lapidus

By Paula Katinas

Bay Ridge — Inna Lapidus is heading from Brooklyn to the Ivy League. As the valedictori an of the Class of 2012 at Fort Hamilton High School, she had her pick from among several elite universities. She chose Brown University.
“I chose it because it has a special feel to it. I feel like it doesn’t get the attention or the publicity other schools get, like Harvard or Yale,” she said.
At Fort Hamilton, Lapidus excelled in all of her subjects, but took a particular liking to math and is considering majoring in math when she gets to Brown. Math can lead to many different types of careers, she said. read more »

Children’s Opera ‘The Big Test’ Draws Big Cheers!

By Rick Buttacavoli

It’s one thing to perform in an opera for a packed house and really nail the performance. It’s another to write a full-length opera that entertains and teaches a lesson. To do both while still attending public school is really something else!
The students at P.S. 102, 211 72nd St., accomplished this incredible feat when members of the school’s Bay View Kids Opera Company presented The Big Test, a 1950s-themed rockin’ opera that was written by teacher Theone Weitz-Frank’s Playwriting Club. read more »
