Bishop Kearney High School’s Annual Sports Awards Dinner was a very special event, honoring winning teams and winning players. More than 300 parents, coaches and members of Kearney’s administration gathered at the Rex Manor to congratulate all those who had taken part in the year’s activities.
Highlights of Kearney’s year in sports included: the JV basketball team winning the Brooklyn/Queens diocesan championship; the Varsity basketball team winning the Brooklyn/Queens division championship and coming in a very close second at the diocesan championship game; the JV softball team winning the Brooklyn/Queens championship; the Varsity softball team winning the Brooklyn/Queens diocesan championship; the cheerleaders winning the Six Flags Adventure Varsity Cheerleading Championship, taking first place in the “Best of the East;” and the boosters winning the GCHSAA Spirit Award at the spring competition.
Numerous awards were presented to seniors at the dinner, in honor of people who have made a significant contribution to the Kearney community over the years. The Sister Geraldine Woods Award for Outstanding Christian Leadership in Athletics was presented to Sarah Stokes and Jessica Nunziata. The Erin Quinlan Memorial Award for Outstanding Kearney Spirit in Athletics was presented to Francesca Ingargiola. The Thomas Gannon Memorial Award for Scholarship, Athletic Ability and School Spirit was awarded to Erin O’Connor and Amanda Duffy.
The Theresa Witty Award (Kearney’s #1 Fan Award), for outstanding support of Kearney’s student-athletes and the athletic program, was given to Mrs. Nancy Gasparino.
The Ed Madden Memorial Award for Outstanding Athletic Ability was awarded to Allison Gasparino. Noel Girgenti received the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award this year for excelling in academics as well as a number of Varsity sports. The Deborah Lovett Award for Courage, Dedication and Leadership was presented to Emily Dripchek, Shannon Fahy, Christina Heyer, Caroline Strehle and Dr. Rocco Sellitto. The Susan Burke Award, recognizing outstanding underclass athletes, was presented to Kristin Ferrigno and Jacqueline Isreal.
This year, two new awards were established. In gratitude for their generosity in allowing Bishop Kearney teams to use their fields, the first Our Lady of Grace Award was presented to Frank LoPiccolo, representing Our Lady of Grace athletics. The second new award was named in honor of Sister Virginia Lake, in recognition of strong Religious Beliefs, Humanitarianism and Sportsmanship. Cathy Wesolowski and Lauren Marino received that award.
Each year, The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) recognizes student athletes who earn an average of 90% or more, while participating in sports. Because Bishop Kearney has so many students in that category, only Kearney students who maintain an average of 95% or more are receive their National Student Athlete Award. This year’s honorees were freshmen Samantha Southard and Taylor Iannicelli, sophomores Marissa De Torre, Kristen Perez, Emily Hiltunen, Julianna Emilio and Nicolette Conti, juniors Alessia Giarracca, Gina Piro, Natalie Juliano, Shannon Biscaino, Dana LaVecchia and Tala Barias, and seniors Noel Girgenti, Jessica Nunziata, Lauren Marino, Christine Nunziata, Cathrine Tucci, Francesca Ingargiola, Diana Shcherbenko and Allison Gasparino.
The school gave thanks to Athletic Director Anthony Troiano, Student Athletic Chairperson Frances Ingargiola and all who helped to make this event so special for all the teams and their parents, especially the seniors, who will be taking their talents to many different colleges and universities in September.
