 Stingrays 3 Stars 1

Talk about saving the best for last! The DHAA JV Division championship game between the first-place Stars and second-place Stingrays went down to the wire and drew more than 100 people.

The game was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to score until 12 minutes into the first period. The Stars started Michael Barbati in goal and he was simply amazing, making some difficult saves early on. Richard Fodera, John Pluchino, Lennon Tomaselli and Nikolas Angilletta played spectacular on defense for the Stars. The Stingrays started goaltender Anthony Scarpaci, who arguably played the game of his life. His fellow defenders Marisa Sparacio and Bobby Ioannou seemed to break up every scoring opportunity the Stars created in their zone. read more »

Eagle Photos by Paula Katinas

Marianne Nicolosi said that when she arrived for work at her new job as executive director of the Bay Ridge Center last month, she looked at a survey form many of the elderly members had filled out. The members were asked their opinions on the center and how the facility is run.

“I was surprised by the answers. They love everything!” Nicolosi said. “I was happy that they were so happy.”

The Bay Ridge Center, formerly known as the Bay Ridge Center for Older Adults, is one of the leading senior citizen centers in the community. Located at 411 Ovington Ave., the center serves hundreds of older adults by providing hot meals, with entrees like chicken cacciatore, recreational activities like Bingo, day trips to Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City, and exercise programs. read more »

Citizen Kane’s Bay Ridge Beat: March 29, 2012

By Friends of Tom Kane

Luck of the Irish … With all the rain in the forecast for last Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Parade, the folks who marched and came to observe the festivities were blessed with nice enough weather to ensure another successful day. The parade featured traditional Irish step dancers, marching bands, bagpipers and all the traditional banter on the reviewing grandstand brought to us once again by Peter Clavin.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg was a special guest at the parade, but perhaps an even more popular political entity making the rounds was Peanut, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis’s pet chihuahua, who was dressed in an adorable green jacket and cap! read more »

By Paula Katinas

Editor’s Note: In response to the firestorm created by the Oxygen Network’s new “reality” series “Brooklyn 11223,” which depicts women cursing, drinking and fighting in Bay Ridge and other Brooklyn neighborhoods, the Brooklyn Eagle is proud to present this feature profiling the “real” women of Bay Ridge and their accomplishments.

Bay Ridge — Josephine Beckmann, the district manager of Community Board 10, began working for the board in 2003, but was very familiar with the board and its work even before she started her job.

Beckmann was a civic leader in Dyker Heights, where she and her husband John, a police lieutenant, live, and had dealings with the local community board when she and her neighbors sought its help in solving quality-of-life issues on their block. read more »
