Yummy! Leske’s Bakery To Reopen

Everyone in Bay Ridge is happy about the reopening of Leske’s Bakery, even Eddie the Eagle! The famous Brooklyn Eagle mascot paid a visit to the bakery a few years ago.

A Bay Ridge foodie’s paradise is rising from the dead!

Leske’s Bakery, which closed in May, is making a comeback, according to state Sen. Marty Golden, and other local officials, who said the shop will reopen in approximately two months under new ownership.

Leske’s is located at 7612 Fifth Ave.

Golden called the reopening “exciting news” and said that even though the bake shop will have new owners, the same bakers will be working there. read more »

Third Ave. Merchants’ “Summer Stroll” Plan Clears Hurdle

It’s still winter, but leaders of a leading business organization in Bay Ridge are thinking ahead to the summer.

The Merchants of Third Avenue organization cleared a major hurdle in its effort to introduce a summer stroll program on the avenue this summer when Community Board 10 voted to approve the business group’s proposal on Monday.

The vote took place at the community board’s monthly meeting.

Under the proposal, which the Merchants group is calling “Summer Stroll On 3rd,” an eight-block stretch of Third Avenue, from 81st Street to 89th Street, will be turned into a Venice-style piazza on four Friday nights – two in July and two in August. read more »

Councilman Vincent Gentile was joined by dozens of women at a press conference held on Feb. 24 to denounce “Brooklyn 11223,” the new reality show that he said presents a negative portrait of women.

The show, which debuts on the Oxygen Network on March 26, follows a group of twenty-something women who apparently spend much of their time cursing, drinking, and dancing in clubs in Bay Ridge and other locations.

“The producers degrade all women,” Gentile said. “We’re here to present the real women of Bay Ridge.” read more »

Vincent Gentile Takes a Stand Against Trashy TV

In a move that is certain to garner more publicity for the show, Bay Ridge councilman and ever-vigilant steward of good taste Vincent Gentile will host a press conference tomorrow morning to speak out against a fresh evil that threatens our district’s decency: the new reality show “Brooklyn 11223.”

We’ve reported on the show before. It’s the Oxygen Network’s try at a “Jersey Shore”-style stereotype cash-in, and through its candid portrayal of a group of Bay Ridge twenty-somethings whose once-healthy friendships have all been devastated by jealousy and double-dealing, it promises to teach us something about the “bonds of friendship,” the “price of betrayal” and ultimately ourselves. read more »

A ‘Piazza’ Is Not a ‘Plaza,’ It’s A Classy ‘Summer Stroll on 3rd’

What’s the difference between a “plaza,” a “piazza” and a “stroll?”

Hopefully, Bay Ridgeites and a select throng of peaceful, law-abiding, culture-loving aficionados will find out this July and August when they come to Third Avenue’s “Summer Stroll.”

The program, which will hopefully take place on selected Friday nights, is such a novel idea that it’s acquired a number of names. One newspaper has called it a “plaza.” Not so. read more »
